Conventional transportation systems using ground-primary linear motors adopted a structure in which long primary coils were continuously installed along the entire travel path. This approach resulted in high equipment costs, significant space requirements, and limited flexibility in layout design. To address these challenges, a new transportation technology called the Discrete Placement Linear Motor (LSM) was developed, combining both flexibility and efficiency.

In this technology, linear motors are installed intermittently along the track on the ground side, and the moving vehicle (carrier) travels by utilizing the motors only in the sections where propulsion is required. The positional relationship of all ground-side linear motors is managed within a common coordinate system provided by an integrated linear scale, enabling continuous tracking of the carrier regardless of its location along the route.

Furthermore, by controlling each linear motor independently, thrust reduction is minimized even when the carrier transitions between multiple motors, ensuring smooth and stable operation. In addition to reducing costs through a lower number of motors, this technology enables the construction of highly flexible rail layouts, including both straight and curved sections, thereby contributing significantly to the optimization of production lines and logistics systems. It also supports the simultaneous control of multiple carriers and reduces power supply capacity requirements, leading to improved energy efficiency.
Looking ahead, applications of this technology are being considered for smart factories and next-generation material handling equipment, and it is expected to become a valuable new option for a wide range of industrial applications.
